Learn Something New And Your Brain Will Be Grateful

Dear Reader,

Anytime you try to learn something new... ice skating, cooking or playing an instrument... you're doing something great for your brain. Science now knows that your brain adds new cells all the time, every day, and you can get your brain to grow even more by learning, and practicing, new skills. Based on a 2009 Gallup Poll, 85% of Americans who don't play an instrument wish they could, and this is a perfect skill to use to help the brain, so says the research.

When it comes to the power of music, a study in 2013 using brain imaging found that listening to music can cause the brain to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that's a universal signal for pleasure to the brain and tells it (right or wrong) that its doing the right thing. Actions like sex and eating bring dopamine naturally, while drugs do so artificially.

Medications actually tricks the brain into releasing dopamine so, it's a fleeting thing. Over time it takes a bigger and bigger dose of the drug of choice to get the same feeling. Learning something new is a lot safer way to go, especially in terms of keeping your brain healthy. While there is the prevailing myth that kids (and adults) don't like to learn new things, just look at the video games or game apps and you'll see the truth is exactly the opposite - we like learning new things.

The game designers know that if you can keep someone on the edge of conquering a new challenge, so it's not too easy or too difficult, but in the Zone of Proximal Development, you can keep people playing a game for hours on end. I can attest to this. The trick of the game (the good ones) is that you have to feel challenged but never overwhelmed so you keep coming back, sharpening those newly learned skills.

Learn Something New And Your Brain Will Be Grateful Continued...

The thing about video games that often trips people up is that what they teach stays with the game... so after all that time, effort and investment, you're only good at a skill that has no real world applications. How often are you going to shoot down aliens or go on a top-secret special ops mission?

When you try to learn a more lasting skill... cooking, playing an instrument or learning a second language, you can harness the brain's love of learning new things and end up with a worthwhile skill in the end. Newness is a signal to the brain that there is something to be learned, and we've evolved to take natural pleasure in learning new things.

Mastering skills leaves us with a sense of fulfillment. In recent years experts have started to study the satisfaction that comes from developing and living one's life to the fullest. Having the sense of a life well lived. The findings suggest that those who feel a greater sense of purpose and desire to continue to grow also tend to have lower cortisol levels, better immunity and more efficient sleeping... all good for the body.

And don't think you're too old to learn something new, you won't be good enough or you're too busy... none of these things are true, or should stand in your way. You can handle the challenges and enjoy the rewards of learning any new thing... music, another language, needlepoint... all you need to do is get started. Your brain will be most grateful.

To your good health,
